Climate Change Catastrophes and the Effect of Ambiguity∗

چکیده

There has been very little research to test whether ambiguity affects individuals’decisions to insure themselves against the catastrophic effects of climate change. This paper attempts to study how individuals respond to the availability of an insurance that would give them immunity to a climate change catastrophe. Moreover, if such an insurance is available to them, do they insure themselves suffi ciently? Further, the study investigates the policy implications for insurance companies: does increased availability of information regarding the probability of the catastrophic event, lead to an increase in insurance subscriptions? Finally, policy implications for the State are investigated Can State intervention ensure a better outcome? It is found that a majority of subjects do insure themselves suffi ciently, if given the opportunity. Removing strategic uncertainty and increased information, leads to a significant increase in insurance subscriptions. Interestingly, it is found that State intervention or a "nudge" can have unintended, adverse consequences.

Responding to Threats of Climate Change Mega-Catastrophes

There is a low but uncertain probability that climate change could trigger “mega-catastrophes,” severe and at least partly irreversible adverse effects across broad regions. This paper first discusses the state of current knowledge and the defining characteristics of potential climate change mega-catastrophes. While some of these characteristics present difficulties for using standard rational ...

On welfare frameworks and catastrophic climate risks

Recent theoretical work in the economics of climate change has suggested that climate policy is highly sensitive to ‘fat-tailed’ risks of catastrophic outcomes (Weitzman, 2009b). Such risks are suggested to be an inevitable consequence of scientific uncertainty about the effects of increased greenhouse gas concentrations on climate. Criticisms of this controversial result fall into three catego...

Climate change effects on economic growth: mixed empirical evidence

West Africa is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This paper analyzed the impacts of climate change on economic growth in Anglophone West Africa with similar background, during the periods 1969-2016. Five growth model equations have been developed to incorporate climate change variables into the model. Panel data estimations such as the fixed effect model, random effect model and Haus...

Climate Change and Crop Yields in Iran and Other OIC Countries

Climate change is the main phenomenon that directly affects the world environment, and changes in the environment affect economic sectors differently. The most important impacts of climate change would be on enhancing the average global temperature and the decrease in precipitation. The agricultural sector is the first and most affected sector in the climate change. We examined the impact of te...

Climate catastrophes

Climate catastrophes, which many times occurred in the geological past, caused the extinction of large or small populations of animals and plants. Changes in the terrestrial and marine biota caused by the catastrophic climate changes undoubtedly resulted in considerable fluctuations in global carbon cycle and atmospheric gas composition. Primarily, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas conten...
